Baldwinsville Community Band
In December of 1979, Baldwinsville band teacher Phillip Sterling founded the Baldwinsville Community Band to give adult instrumental musicians a group with which to perform. The band performs classical and modern music, marches, medleys, seasonal music and show tunes. Funding for the band is by dues ($10) and donations. The band has 501(c)(3) tax status and all donations are tax deductible.
Rehearsals are Wednesday evenings October through May from 7PM to 8:45PM at Durgee Junior High School in Baldwinsville; take the entrance closest to parking lot, band room is first hall to your left. There are no auditions and new players are always welcome! During the summer concert season, June through August, the band practices for only one hour every other week, usually at a local church. Concerts are held on the opposite weeks.
Membership: Band membership is open to any musician of high school age or older. The present membership is about 60 players, ranging in age from 20 to 80+, and includes over 20 founding members. In addition to Baldwinsville residents, members come from Camillus, Canastota, Chittenango, Cicero, Clay, Fulton, Liverpool, Manlius, North Syracuse, Phoenix, and Syracuse.
Members receive a schedule of concert dates and music for home practice and for performances. Music stands are provided for rehearsals but members must bring their own stand to performances unless otherwise noted. Concert dress is our red band shirt (or your own red or white), black pants or skirt/dress, provided by the individual members.
Performances: The band plays about 10 one hour concerts a year. The band does not charge for performances, but will accept donations to defray costs. In addition, small ensembles perform for civic occasions, such as the Memorial Day Ceremony in Baldwinsville, the Liverpool Elks Club Flag Day, and the Baldwinsville Christmas Tree Lighting.
If you are interested in having the band perform a concert, you will be asked to supply the following for the band; 50 folding type chairs (without arms); a staging area at least 30’ wide and 20’ deep. Please note that concert area can be indoor only or outdoor weather permitting. Please provide for the audience; publicity to local media giving concert location, time, and seating arrangements (bring chairs or chairs provided).
Performances are generally scheduled on Wednesdays as this is our regular rehearsal night.
